Tips for NOT Getting Sick

Hello, everyone! Welcome to my blog. I’ve recently made the switch back to blogging (versus vlogging) and I’m excited to get writing again and I’m thrilled that you’ve decided to pop by for a visit. Grab a tea and let’s dive into this week’s blog.

Last week, I did an Instagram post about Winter Wellness. It’s minus a million here in Canada and everyone I talk to is either just getting over a sickness or starting to feel one coming on. It’s really no surprise. We are indoors more (those poor teachers and indoor recess!!), we aren’t getting any vitamin D (at least not from the sun), and our food intake naturally tends to be lower in nutrients in the winter. If you are like me, you are more drawn to high carbohydrate foods like pasta, potatoes, and bread. And there’s nothing wrong with that! Our bodies crave what we need. In the summer, we’ll be drawn more to salads and fruit, foods that have higher water content to keep us hydrated on hot days. Everything has its season.

Unfortunately, one of the downfalls of this higher carb season is it’s not as nutrient dense. Meaning there just aren’t as many vitamins, minerals, and micro-nutrients that we really need to support our immune system.

Thankfully, there are plenty of things we CAN do to support and strengthen our immune system so you can actually AVOID getting sick in the winter.

(Yes, it’s true. You can avoid getting sick. You can protect yourself. I have so many testimonials on people doing just that. It’s not a myth.)

Let’s start with the things you can start doing today:

  1. Ditch the sugar. Sugar suppresses your immune system. When I talk to kids about this I explain the our body has an army of amazing warriors that protect us from getting sick and when we eat sugar it's like our warriors now have to walk through knee deep mud. Sure, some will still be able to fight but most will be too slow to protect us.

  2. Ditch the processed foods. Most of these foods are high in sugar and extremely low in nutrition. They are suppressing your immune system and offering zero support nutrition-wise. Stick to foods with ingredients you can pronounce and ideally foods that came from Mama Earth, herself. ☺️

  3. Sleep. For all that is good… just go to bed. Sleep is the ONLY time your body has a chance to rest and repair. You need this time. If you don’t make time for this — your body will insist you rest by making sure you get sick. So, turn the tv off, put the phone away and just go to bed. If you need help with sleep, I recommend a drop of this on your pillow. :) Click here for my blog post on SLEEP

  4. Incorporate immune-boosting essential oils daily such as OnGuard, Oregano, and Tea Tree (all three of these oils are found in the Top 10 oil collection check it out here). This step has by far been the biggest game changer when it comes to NOT getting sick. I could write a book on OnGuard testimonials alone. If there’s just one thing you do to support your immune system this winter, let it be OnGuard. High in anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant properties makes this oil highly effective for preventing illness, and combating it once it starts. I recommend rolling it on the back of your neck every morning before heading to work or school and/or on the bottom of your feet before bed. Remember to dilute!

  5. Fill the gaps… and there are ALWAYS gaps. You might be surprised to know how few vitamins and minerals (not to mention phyto-nutrients and other important micro-nutrients) are in our food. So, while I want you to get your nutrients from food (please don’t stop eating those leafy greens and walnuts) chances are (pretty much 100% chance) you need to supplement. All supplements are not created equally. Some can do more harm than good. You don’t need mega doses of anything, but you do need a top up of bioavailable vitamins and chelated minerals. I recommend Lifelong Vitality which includes in addition to your vitamins and minerals, extra antioxidant support, and Omega 3.

Here’s a more in-depth post on Lifelong Vitality where I explain why it is dōTERRA’s number 1 selling product (and why I think it’s so important you add it to your health regime).

Those are my top 5 tips. If I could add one more it would be to wash your hands with soap as often as possible. Not hand-sanitizer (not all of them work, some actually disrupt your gut biome which is integral to your immune system).

Ok, so top 6 tips. I hope you are able to take at least a couple of them and incorporate them into your life. The better you take care of yourself, the less likely you’ll get sick and if you do get sick, the quicker you’ll recover.
